Like many fellow engineers, I began my degree in Civil Engineering without fully understanding what a career in civil engineering involved. Regrettably, this left me feeling uninspired, with little vision of the exciting career and experiences ahead of me.
Had I understood the potential for career progress, scale of projects, opportunity to travel, rewarding experiences, and salary, I would certainly have been much more motivated to complete my degree in earnest and join the industry.
After completing my second year of a four-year engineering degree, I had the fantastic opportunity to work with a Tier 1 contractor. My 1st major project was on the London Crossrail, delivering an underground station. This three-month work experience was a pivotal moment in my career. It was the inspiration I needed to work as hard as possible over the next two years, graduate, and accept a position as a site engineer with the same Tier 1 contractor.
After 13 years in the civil engineering and construction industry, I am now a Chartered Engineer and a Project Manager with a Tier 1 civil engineering contractor in Australia.
Not everyone gets the oppertunity to work on a major infrastructure project early in their careers. This website aims to help engineering and construction professionals gain a better understanding of what it’s like to work in our industry.
